Ethyl lactate caused severe eye irritation and permanent eye damage in rabbits but was not a skin irritant. No sensitization was induced in volunteers given repeated skin applications, however, an acne sufferer who used a gel containing ethyl lactate became sensitized. The lactate was generally of low acute oral and dermal toxicity in laboratory animals, although central nervous system effects have been reported in mice treated orally or by injection.
