Lithol rubine B was of low acute oral toxicity in rats. Repeated oral administration to rodents resulted in kidney damage. There was no convincing evidence of reproductive effects in rats treated orally or of carcinogenicity in limited feeding studies in rats and mice. No mutagenic activity was detected in Ames bacterial tests using pure samples. Lithol rubine B did not cause skin irritation in rabbits. It induced skin sensitization in man.
