Methyl 4-methylbenzoate induced a sensitization response in one individual following local application, and was moderately irritating to the skin of rabbits. In acute studies, low toxicity was demonstrated in rodents treated orally and in rabbits treated dermally. Inhalation caused blood effects in mice. A limited study reported foetotoxicity in rats following inhalation exposure during pregnancy. There was no evidence of mutagenicity in an Ames bacterial test.
