Pamoic acid was a mild skin irritant in rabbits. Instillation of pamoic acid into the eye of rabbits caused severe irritation and damage. Acute toxicity was moderate in mice treated by intraperitoneal injection. A simpler, structurally-related compound was not mutagenic in bacterial assays, including the Ames test.
