Polysorbate was essentially non-irritant to the eyes and skin of volunteers and rabbits. It has apparently induced only a few cases of skin sensitization in man. In rats, it was of low acute oral toxicity and studies involving repeated oral administration identified no sites for toxic attack. Benign skin tumours developed in mice treated dermally and it enhanced the action of a known skin carcinogen.
