Polysorbate 65 was essentially non-irritant when applied to the skin of volunteers on two separate occasions, but repeated skin applications caused irritation in mice. It was of low acute oral toxicity in rats. No specific target organs were identified in studies involving repeated oral administration to rats, although diarrhoea was induced. There was some indication of decreased pup survival in a multi-generation feeding study in rats.
