Thyme and thyme oil have been associated with irritation of the skin and mucous membranes in humans and thyme oil caused skin irritation in mice and rabbits. Various individuals have shown skin sensitization reactions to thyme, thyme oil, or its constituents. Thyme oils were of low acute toxicity in rats treated orally and in rabbits treated dermally. Limited studies involving repeated oral administration of thyme oil to mice showed no overt adverse effects. Thyme oil caused DNA damage in bacteria but gave no conclusive evidence of activity in a test for chromosome damage in hamster cells.
