Tris(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate was slightly irritant to the skin of guinea-pigs, rabbits and mice and to the eyes of rabbits. Attempts to induce sensitization were unsuccessful in guinea-pigs treated by multiple skin applications. The trimellitate was of low acute oral and dermal toxicity in laboratory animals, and caused irritation, lung changes and some deaths when inhaled by rats. Repeated oral administration induced effects on the blood and liver (including peroxisomal proliferation) in rats. There was no evidence of genotoxic activity in a wide range of screening assays.
