Vinyl propionate was a skin and eye irritant in laboratory animals. Low acute oral and dermal toxicity was demonstrated in the rat and rabbit respectively. Breathing difficulties and central nervous system effects were observed in rats and rabbits exposed to atmospheres containing vinyl propionate. Limited studies involving repeated oral administration revealed gastro-intestinal damage in rabbits and liver effects in cats. Vinyl propionate induced chromosome effects in human white blood cells treated in culture, but was evidently not mutagenic to bacteria.
