Zinc N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate was of low to moderate acute oral toxicity in laboratory animals. Repeated oral administration caused changes in the brain of rats. Effects on the liver and blood have been reported in rats and rabbits in Soviet studies. No reproductive effects were seen in rats treated orally. Although limited oral and injection studies in mice found no convincing evidence of carcinogenicity, mutagenic potential has been demonstrated in Ames bacterial tests. Skin sensitization reactions have been commonly recorded in patients with rubber-induced dermatitis. Moderate eye irritation was reported in rabbits.
