The Scientific Committee of the European Food Safety Authority has updated its draft guidance document on the safety assessment of botanicals and botanical preparations to be used in food (if not already covered under specific regulations, such as those on novel foods or genetically modified organisms), following the public consultation on its proposals (reported in Toxicology and Regulatory News 2008, 47(2), 27). An EFSA Scientific Cooperation (ESCO) Working Group on Botanicals will test the proposed approach for the safety assessment of a selected number of botanicals and botanical preparations, after which the Committee expects to further update the guidance document.
