To help applicants provide data necessary to assess potential genotoxicity, a Panel of the European Food Safety Authority has issued a strategy document for chemicals included in subgroups of Flavouring Group Evaluation 19. This Group contains 347 alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones (and their precursors) – compounds that are thought to possess a structural alert for genotoxicity. A list of flavourings considered by the Panel to be representative of the substances in FGE 19 has also been published.

[Statements of the Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF)….on genotoxicity test strategy for substances belonging to subgroups of FGE.19…and on the list of alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones representative of FGE.19 substances for genotoxicity testing.
