In a move to divide the workload of the present AFC Panel (on additives, flavourings, processing aids and food contact materials), which apparently accounts for almost 50% of requests for scientific advice received by the European Food Safety Authority, the AFC Panel is to be split into the Panel on food additives and nutrient sources added to food (ANS) and the Panel on food contact materials, enzymes, flavourings and processing aids (CEF). The expectation is that these Panels will be functional by mid-2008.
