On 12 June 2009, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Regulation “concerning the placing on the market and use of biocidal products” (COM(2009)267) that will replace the current Directive 98/8/EC on biocides. The proposed regulation is scheduled to enter into force on 1 January 2013 and includes provisions for the mandatory sharing of animal toxicity data (as is already required for chemicals under REACH, the European legislation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals). ECHA, the European Chemicals Agency, will coordinate the activities for the scientific assessment of these active substances. For further information visit on the EC Environment website. {182708}
