Eagle-eyed readers of this updated inventory will have spotted that 1,3-polybutadiene has vanished from the provisional list of additives that may be used in the manufacture of plastic materials and articles intended for food-contact applications (for which a valid petition had been received by 31 December 2006). Although not yet authorised at Community level, the remaining substances may continue to be used according to national legislation after the 1 January 2010 deadline when the positive list comes into force (Commission Directive 2008/39/EC; reported in Toxicology and Regulatory News 2008, 47(4), 63), until a decision is taken on whether or not to include them in the positive list. The status of the safety evaluation for these substances can be checked on the website of the European Food Safety Authority (www.efsa.europa.eu).
