June 2011 saw the release of the fourth revised edition of the UN’s Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS, Rev.4). This provides guidance on the classification of chemicals according to physical and chemical hazards, and on the standardised communication of these hazards (e.g. through labels and safety data sheets). The latest revision includes new hazard categories for chemically unstable gases and non-flammable aerosols, additional clarification of some of the hazard criteria, and further rationalisation of precautionary statements.
