When neat or in dilute solution, sodium hexametaphosphate was at most mildly irritating to the skin and eyes of rabbits, but an unspecified concentration was reported to cause corrosion of these tissues. A dilute solution was not irritating to the skin of humans. Sodium hexametaphosphate was of low acute toxicity when given orally to rodents, and in rabbits treated dermally, and displayed little toxicity in an acute inhalation study in rats. On repeated oral administration to laboratory rodents, the principal toxic effect was kidney damage. In rodents treated orally, tests on reproductive and developmental toxicity and limited investigations of carcinogenicity revealed no evidence of activity. Sodium hexametaphosphate was not mutagenic in a limited Ames bacterial assay. {1876}
