Under CLP, there is a legal obligation for suppliers to evaluate the hazards of chemicals (substances and mixtures) to be placed on the market, and to classify and label them appropriately. An option also exists for Member State Competent Authorities or industry to propose harmonised classification and labelling of a substance across Europe. Following the submission of a CLH report, ECHA organises a public consultation period of 45 days. Under this scheme, proposals have been submitted by the Austrian, Danish, German and Italian authorities to standardise the classification and labelling of:

benzo[rst]pentaphene
dibenzo[b,def]chrysene
fludioxonil
halosulfuron-methyl
metaldehyde
4,4′-sulfonylbisphenol, polymer with ammonium chloride, pentachlorophosphorane and phenol
The reports on benzo[rst]pentaphene and dibenzo[b,def]chrysene (which propose classification for carcinogenic and mutagenic potential) use read-across from benzo[a]pyrene, which has been identified as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) (see page 5 of this issue of Toxicology and Regulatory News).
